October 10 - Freshman/Sophomore Cover Letters & Resumes

Freshman and Sophomore members of OWIB had the opportunity to attend a resume and cover letter workshop to help learn how to create and organized an effective resume that is sure to attract any recruiter’s eye. Tips included placing experiences in reverse chronological order, making sure all sentences are formatted the same, and using as many quantitative statements as possible. Annibell Neil, Freshman says "I found the resume workshop super helpful. It has definitely strengthened my resume and built up my confidence when presenting it to future employers.” Members also were given time to edit one another’s resumes, helping many improve their resume in ways they wouldn’t have thought of before. Thanks to this workshop, all OWIB members will have a good understanding of how to create a proper resume, a key skill they can utilize throughout their entire professional lives. Freshman member, Shelby Engle says that “Not only did we go over all of the key points of a professional and career-ready resume and cover letter, but we spent time looking over each other’s, which was incredibly helpful and confidence-building.” OWIB normally conducts a cover letter and resume focus workshop in the fall to help members feel more confident going into interviews and career fairs.

October 14 - Race for the Cure

OWIB has dedicated this semester to really give back to the Athens Community. OWIB helped facilitate the 2018 Susan G. Komen Southeast Ohio Race for the Cure. The members were able to set up the race the previous night at Peden Stadium, help get the community registered for the race, and facilitated the breakdown of the event. VP of Finance, Erin Mariner, Junior, had the opportunity to run the race as all the members cheered her and other competitors on once they crossed the finish line. Mariner says, “The Race for the Cure is for a really good cause that affects a lot of people and a lot of families, so even just running and supporting is meaningful. The greatest experience was I got my fastest time ever for a 5k, and while running it it was amazing to see how many people were there to run and support and how all ages were involved.” The race was able to raise $65,904.05 for research and better care to give back to the community. Ohio Women in Business is excited to help at the event next year and support the vision of a world without breast cancer.

To keep the friendly energy thriving OWIB hosted an endorsement fest to help members gain more connections and endorsements.. October 31

To wrap up October and fully embrace the spooky season OWIB had a festive Halloween Dips and Crafts

event to help new and old OWIB members socialize by snacking on tasty treats and making fall crafts together. The event was a potluck that asked all members willing to contribute to bring dips or treats to snack on. Underclassmen had chips and drinks to cover, while upperclassmen were in charge of the dips. From buffalo chicken dip all the way to s’mores dip. The girls munched on their dips, listened to Halloween music, and crafted up Halloween decorations and cards. Mason Colley and Brynn Ford came together and crafted up Halloween signs for their new apartment. Mason even mentioned that the social “was an awesome way to connect with different members of OWIB as well as have a great time giving back to professors that have given so much to students. And the dips were amazing too.” This event turned out to be a huge success where laughter was shared and girls were able to bond with people they would not normally talk to at an informational meeting!

This was an eventful October where members got to network, learn, and even eat together. OWIB also successfully held a Chipotle fundraiser and raised close to $105 all thanks to members buying burritos and bringing their friends.

That concludes the events from October 2018. Be on the lookout for the November 2018 newsletter in a couple weeks. Thanks for reading. Any questions regarding the events or organization please email the VP of Marketing, Kara Buck, at kb982115@ohio.edu.
